The Revelation of Jesus Christ

must shortly... Genesis Numbers 2 Kings Job Psalms Proverbs Isaiah Jeremiah Ezekiel Matthew Mark Acts Romans 1 Corinthians Philippians 1 Thessalonians 1 Timothy 2 Timothy Hebrews 2 Peter 3 John Revelation Notes Shortly means soon. For God a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day. Time is not an issue. But He puts it in perspective for our sakes. When Joseph was asked by Pharoah to interpret his two dreams, he told him that the predicted events would shortly come to pass. In fact they happened in their life time. But when refering to universal events in the Book of Revelation, events that will 'shortly come to pass' have taken millenia to happen and are still unfolding. The same language is used for events within a lifetime and events that take millenia to unfold. Yet because God has said, we can be certain that they will take place. This kind of language also implies that God is able. He asks "Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem?"" What God has said He will do He is able to perform. We can believe it, even though it may have happened in the past. We can believe it even when it has not yet happened. We may not be able to see, fathom or explain it but can base our faith on what God has already done in history, and personally in our own lives. Crucial to our assurance of salvation is the fact that because He has promised God can do it. Our time on this earth is short compared to eternity. By reminding God of this, like David, we are reminded of our mortality and weaknesses. We may get discouraged as we see the apparent success of an evil world. But the scriptures show that God is fair and just and wickedness lasts for just a short time. In fact it lasts only for a moment. |
