God's predictions about the future are an important part of His Word. 'What shall come to pass' simply means 'what will happen'. Let's see what happens and what is predicted in the Book of Genesis. When Cain killed Abel it was the first murder. A pattern of behaviour began to emerge that was to become part of human nature. Cain predicted that anyone that met him would try to kill him. As in the days of Noah, God pleads today for us to come into a saving relationship with Him. The earth is filled with violence. To establish His kingdom God will destroy the earth but not with water. He assures us of this, even today, through the signature of the rainbow in the sky. Fearing that he would be killed because of his beautiful wife, Abram asked Sarai to say she was his sister - first with Pharaoh and then with Abimelech. Lot chose to settle in the well-watered plains of Jordan, living in the city of Sodom. By God's intervention he and his daughters escaped the destruction of Sodom and Gommorah. Lot's daughters felt that without their intervention they would not have an opportunity to have children. So they made their father drunk and slept with him. God promised Abraham that he would be a father of nations. Abraham proved his faithfulness by his willingness to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice. Abraham's servant, commissioned to find a wife for his master's son, asked God to give him a sign - the one who would offer to draw water for him and his camels would be the chosen woman. Thus was Rebecca found for Isaac. Lastly 'Come near, I pray thee' tells the story of Jacob - his future blessed in error yet bound in blessing. We see that God's predictions are promises that are sure whereas man's predictions are often nothing more than anticipated fears. When we surrender to God's leading and remember to trust in Him, we will avoid the awkward and sometimes threatening situations that occur when we take matters into our own hands as Lot's family and Jacob did. |
